Overview
For many people experiencing homelessness, the greatest untapped resource isn’t a government program — it’s their own family. Get Back Home helps resolve conflicts, rebuild trust, and reconnect individuals with relatives who can provide stable housing and long-term support. Inspired by grassroots nonprofit work in California, this program offers a structural fix rooted in human relationships.
The Problem
Billions are spent each year on shelters and aid programs, yet homelessness continues to grow. Many people don’t lack the ability to work or live in a home — they lack reconciliation with family who might otherwise welcome them back. Substance abuse, unemployment, or personal conflict often create barriers that remain unresolved. Without tackling these root causes, individuals are left cycling between the street, shelters, and temporary aid.
The Idea
Get Back Home proposes embedding trained counselors into existing homeless services. Counselors work directly with individuals to uncover the conflict that caused their family separation, then create a plan to resolve it. With drug counseling, job training, or behavioral commitments in place, families are invited back into the conversation and given confidence that their loved one is ready to rebuild. Commitment contracts formalize the arrangement, giving both sides stability.
How it Works
Resolving issues by solving the root cause.

- Family First → Restores dignity and belonging within natural support networks.
- Cost Effective → Saves public funds by reducing reliance on long-term shelter and aid programs.
- Scalable → A model that can be adopted across nonprofits and government agencies nationwide.
